99% of guys want abs. It’s this muscle that girls like, and always something that has been a core of a lean beautiful body. There is not a lot of people who want to look like guys with freak muscle mass, but there is a ton that want good abdominal muscles (with some biceps and chest usually).
Ok, before I get into ways of achieving those dream abs, I want to say something important. Just like any other muscle, how naturally developed it is and its shape are determined by genetics.
Yes, you are more than welcome to read Lazar Angelov’s book “The abs – secret revealed” to learn some good stuff (for those who don’t know he is a popular fitness model mostly known for his thick lean abdominal muscles). But please don’t expect to obtain his sick abs because this guy certainly has a genetic advantage for this muscle group.
Ok, in my opinion, there are 2 ways for you to finally see those abdominals. The first one is superior to the second one and you probably have heard of it a lot.
Way #1: Get leaner! The reason why 80% of people don’t see their abdominal muscles is simple: they have over 10% bodyfat. From my experience let me break it down for you like this: Over 15% fat – you have a little belly, 10-15% – you have faded abs, 8-10% – great abs, under 8% – you are shredded!
Way #2: Hypertrophy your abdominals (BUT NOT EXTERNAL OBLIQUES, or side abs in simple terms). Again, just like any other muscle – if you train it with progressive resistance – it will grow and get thicker. In this case, there is a chance they will pop out even through some layer of fat. That’s what I experimented with and applied, and it worked!
Like I already mentioned above, even though I used method #2 and it worked for me, method #1 is more applicable in most situations. But if you combine both properly – that’s when you will get the biggest result. The question you want to ask yourself is: do you just want lean stomach, or also thick, popping out abs?
If you decide to go the 2nd route, be careful though… like I said only apply it for your rectus abdominus, not external obliques because it will make your side muscles get bigger in size and make your waist wider. That’s not what you want ever, because you won’t get rid of it easily, if you can at all. The only option in this situation will be to work on shoulders, lats and quads to make your waist smaller visually.
