Unusual advice for crazy workouts… Make them explosive!

 

Here is something I discovered not so long ago… and it really made a difference!

 

We’ve always been told that we MUST have carbs before working out, or otherwise we are going to have a shitty session. The thing is, it isn’t true!

 

You might have heard of the state called “hypoglycemia”, which is the temporary state of low-sugar in the body. But the question you might be asking is: how can I have low sugar if I recently had carbs? The thing is, your body releases insulin in response to carbs, and insulin lowers your blood sugar below normal TEMPORARILY (unless you are extremely insulin-sensitive person). This is why, if you see somebody at the gym yawning, it is very likely that they had lots of sugar before workout (or high-carb meal), or didn’t eat for a while before workout (which means the same – low sugar).

 

Onto my point now. What do I recommend you to try? Don’t have carbs with your pre-workout meal (2-3 hours before session). You body will still be using stored muscle and liver glycogen from previous meals (or even yesterday’s dinner if you are going to train soon after you wake up). So your body will still have stored energy to use during the workout, but it won’t have that hypoglycemic effect that will make you groggy during the session. As a result, you are going to have a way more explosive workout than usual.

 

But not everything is so sweet, there is one drawback to this, and relatively major one – you won’t get as much “pump” during the workout. But, always chasing “pump” is a road to nowhere. I will talk about it in another article.

 

So, just experiment. Have NO carbs before explosive/power/ strength based sessions. For more volume/pump ones – have your carbs. In my opinion, this is the best course of action. If it ends up not working for you, whatever, at least you will know for future.
